How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the first discount percentage.
  3. If there is an extra discount, enter it as well.
  4. Read the final price, your savings and the effective discount.

The formula

Final price = Price × (1 − Discount 1 ÷ 100) × (1 − Discount 2 ÷ 100). You save = Price − Final price. Effective discount = (1 − Final ÷ Price) × 100.

Worked example

A ₹2,500 item with 20% off and an extra 10% off: ₹2,500 × 0.8 × 0.9 = ₹1,800. You save ₹700, an effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Understanding your result

Successive discounts are applied one after another, so the second discount applies to an already reduced price. That is why 20% and 10% make 28% and not 30%.

When to use it

  • Compare sale offers.
  • Check a shop invoice or coupon.
  • Work out what the original price was worth after a promotion.

In-depth guide

Two discounts are not added together

A second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total saving is less than the sum of the two. The table shows the effective discount.

Finding the original price

If you know the sale price and the discount, divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A shirt sold for ₹1,200 after 20% off had an original price of ₹1,200 ÷ 0.8 = ₹1,500.

Compare offers properly

  • Percentage off a higher list price can still cost more than a lower list price with a smaller discount. Compare the final prices.
  • Check for a maximum discount cap on coupon and card offers.
  • Add delivery charges and GST before you compare shops.
  • A free item is a discount too. Work out the price per unit.

For sellers

Before you run a sale, check your margin after the discount. A 20% discount on an item with a 25% margin leaves very little profit. Use the Profit Margin Calculator or the Selling Price Calculator to test it first.

Assumptions and limits

Does not include GST, delivery or coupon caps. Some offers are capped at a maximum rupee amount.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 20% plus 10% not 30%?

The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 28%.

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100.

Is GST included?

Not unless your entered price includes it.

Can I use it for a single discount?

Yes. Leave the extra discount empty.

What if the offer has a cap?

Compare your saving with the cap. The smaller one applies.
