How to use this calculator

  1. Type the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
  2. Pick +, −, × or ÷.
  3. Type the second fraction.
  4. Read the simplified answer, the mixed number and the decimal.

The formula

Add: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) ÷ bd. Subtract: (ad − bc) ÷ bd. Multiply: ac ÷ bd. Divide: ad ÷ bc. The result is divided by the greatest common divisor (GCD) of top and bottom to simplify it.

Worked example

3/4 + 5/6 = (3×6 + 5×4) ÷ (4×6) = 38/24. The GCD of 38 and 24 is 2, so the simplified answer is 19/12, which is 1 7/12 or about 1.5833.

Understanding your result

The line "Before simplifying" shows the raw result so you can follow the working. A negative answer keeps the minus sign on the top. Dividing by a fraction whose top is zero is not possible.

When to use it

  • Check homework on fractions.
  • Scale recipes and measurements.
  • Combine parts in woodwork, sewing and construction.

Assumptions and limits

Use whole numbers for the top and bottom. Denominators cannot be zero. To use a mixed number, convert it first: 2 1/3 is 7/3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Cross-multiply to a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) ÷ bd. Then simplify.

How do I divide one fraction by another?

Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second. 3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 2.

What is a simplified fraction?

A fraction whose top and bottom share no common factor other than 1. 38/24 simplifies to 19/12.

What is a mixed number?

A whole number plus a proper fraction. 19/12 is the same as 1 7/12.

Can I enter a decimal in a fraction?

Use whole numbers here. To use 0.5, enter 1 and 2, or multiply the top and bottom by 10 first.
