How to use this calculator

  1. Choose Add or Subtract.
  2. Enter the first duration in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Enter the second duration.
  4. Read the total at the top and the other forms below it.

The formula

Convert each duration to seconds: hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. Add or subtract, then convert back to hours, minutes and seconds.

Worked example

14:45:30 + 11:30:00 = 26:15:30, which is 1 day, 2 hours, 15 minutes and 30 seconds, or about 26.2583 hours.

Understanding your result

A negative result means the second duration is longer than the first. Minutes and seconds above 59 are fine, they are carried over automatically.

When to use it

  • Add up work hours, shifts and timesheets.
  • Total video or audio running times.
  • Find the time left between two durations.

Assumptions and limits

This tool works with durations, not clock times on a 12 or 24-hour dial. Use the Date Difference Calculator for dates.
