How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your CGPA.
  2. Pick the formula your board or university follows.
  3. For a custom rule, enter the multiplier.
  4. Read the percentage and the class band.

The formula

CBSE: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Simple rule: Percentage = CGPA × 10. VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Custom: Percentage = CGPA × your multiplier.

Worked example

A CGPA of 8.2 gives 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9% under the CBSE rule. The same CGPA gives 82% with ×10, and 74.5% with the VTU formula.

Understanding your result

Different bodies use different formulas, so the same CGPA can mean different percentages. Always use the formula your board, university or employer asks for. The class band is the common Indian one (75+ distinction, 60+ first class).

When to use it

  • Fill job and admission forms that ask for a percentage.
  • Check the percentage before applying abroad.
  • Compare CGPA results across boards.

CGPA to percentage table

The table applies the three common rules on this page to a range of CGPA values on a 10 point scale.

Which rule should you use?

Use the rule your own board, university or the receiving institution tells you to use. CBSE uses a multiplier of 9.5 for its CGPA. Some universities, such as VTU, publish their own formula. Many colleges and employers accept the simple ×10 rule only if they say so. If a form asks for an equivalent percentage, check the instructions for the preferred method and attach the official conversion if one exists.

Converting a percentage back to CGPA

To go the other way under the CBSE rule, divide the percentage by 9.5. For example, 77.9% divided by 9.5 gives a CGPA of about 8.2. For the simple rule, divide by 10. The Percentage to CGPA Calculator does this for you.

Common questions people have

  • A CGPA is an average of grade points across subjects, so it is not the same as the percentage on a mark sheet.
  • A 4.0 scale CGPA is different from a 10 point scale. Use the GPA Calculator for the 4.0 scale.
  • The converted figure is for forms and general use. Your institution's official statement is final.

Assumptions and limits

This is a conversion for forms and general use, not an official certificate. Your institution's rule is final. For a 4.0 scale CGPA use the GPA Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CBSE CGPA to percentage formula?

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5, as given in the CBSE circular for Class 10 grade points.

Why do universities use different formulas?

Each body sets its own grading and conversion rules, so a CGPA is not worth the same percentage everywhere.

Is CGPA × 10 correct?

It is used by several universities. Check yours first.

Can I use this for a 4.0 CGPA?

No. This tool is for the 10-point scale. Use the GPA Calculator for 4.0.
