How to use this calculator

  1. Write each item as score, weight.
  2. Put each item on its own line.
  3. Read the weighted average at the top.
  4. Compare it with the simple average below.

The formula

Weighted average = Σ (Score × Weight) ÷ Σ Weight.

Worked example

85 × 30 + 78 × 20 + 92 × 50 = 2,550 + 1,560 + 4,600 = 8,710. Dividing by the total weight of 100 gives 87.1. The simple average is 85.

Understanding your result

A heavier weight moves the average toward that score. If the weights do not add up to 100, the result is scaled by the total weight and a note says so.

When to use it

  • Work out a course grade from assignments, tests and exams.
  • Combine scores of different importance.
  • Compute a weighted price or rating.

Assumptions and limits

Weights must be zero or more. Percentages and points both work as weights.

Frequently asked questions

What is a weighted average?

An average where each value counts in proportion to its weight rather than equally.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight.

Do weights need to add up to 100?

No. The result is divided by whatever the total is.

What is the difference from a simple average?

A simple average treats every item equally. A weighted one does not.

Can I use it for a GPA?

Yes, with grade points as scores and credits as weights.
