How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the distance in kilometres.
  2. Enter your vehicle's mileage in km per litre.
  3. Enter today's fuel price per litre.
  4. Choose one way or round trip and read the cost.

The formula

Fuel needed (litres) = Distance ÷ Mileage. Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre. Cost per km = Fuel cost ÷ Distance.

Worked example

A 450 km trip at 18 km/l needs 25 litres. At ₹103 a litre the fuel cost is ₹2,575, or about ₹5.72 per km. As a round trip the distance is 900 km, which costs ₹5,150.

Understanding your result

Real mileage varies with traffic, speed, load and air conditioning, so use your own recent average rather than the brochure figure. Add a small buffer for city driving.

When to use it

  • Budget a road trip before leaving.
  • Compare petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles.
  • Work out a fair fuel contribution for a shared ride.

Assumptions and limits

Fuel price and mileage are inputs you control. Tolls, parking and wear are not included. Use the Travel Cost Calculator for a full trip budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your mileage to get litres, then multiply by the fuel price.

How do I find my real mileage?

Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, refill and divide the kilometres driven by the litres added.

Does this work for diesel, CNG or electric?

Yes for any fuel with a price per unit and a distance per unit. Use km per kg for CNG.

Why is my actual cost higher?

Traffic, speed, load and air conditioning reduce mileage compared with the figure you entered.

Can I split the fuel cost between passengers?

Use the Travel Cost Calculator, which divides the trip cost per person.
