How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the bill before the tip.
  2. Set the tip percentage with the slider or the box.
  3. Enter how many people are sharing.
  4. Read the total and each person's share.

The formula

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Each person pays Total ÷ People. When rounding up, the total is raised to the next amount that divides evenly among everyone.

Worked example

On a ₹1,850 bill with a 10% tip the tip is ₹185 and the total is ₹2,035. Shared by 4 people, each pays about ₹509.

Understanding your result

Rounding up makes the share a whole rupee and nudges the tip slightly higher, shown in "Tip as % of bill". The chart shows the bill and tip as a share of the total.

When to use it

  • Decide a fair tip at a restaurant.
  • Split a group dinner quickly.
  • Check if a service charge is already in the bill.

Assumptions and limits

Tipping customs vary by country and venue. In India a service charge is often already included, so check your bill first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. 10% of ₹1,850 is ₹185.

What tip percentage is normal?

It varies by country. In India 5% to 10% is common where no service charge is added. In the US 15% to 20% is typical.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is accepted. Enter the amount you want the tip based on.

What does rounding up do?

It raises the total so that each person pays a whole amount.

Is the service charge already a tip?

A service charge is added by the restaurant. Check the bill before adding more.
