How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the shape.
  2. Choose the unit your measurements are in.
  3. Enter the dimensions that appear.
  4. Read the area in sq ft, sq m, sq yards, cents and acres.

The formula

Rectangle = Length × Width. Triangle = ½ × Base × Height. Circle = π × Radius². Trapezoid = ½ × (a + b) × Height. Parallelogram = Base × Height. 1 cent = 435.56 sq ft. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 100 cents.

Worked example

A rectangle 20 ft × 15 ft is 300 sq ft, which is 27.871 m² or 0.6887 cent. A circle with a 3 m radius covers 28.274 m², which is 304.34 sq ft.

Understanding your result

For an odd-shaped plot, split it into rectangles and triangles, find each area and add them. The perimeter line helps with fencing and edging.

When to use it

  • Measure a room, plot or farm field.
  • Find the quantity of paint, tiles or flooring needed.
  • Convert between sq ft, cents and acres for property.

Assumptions and limits

These are planning estimates. Real use depends on material quality, site conditions and workmanship. Confirm quantities with your engineer or contractor before ordering. For legal land records, use the survey measurements and the units in the title deed. A cent is taken as 1/100 acre.
