How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the shape.
  2. Choose the unit of your measurements.
  3. Enter the dimensions.
  4. Read the volume in cubic metres, litres and cubic feet.

The formula

Box = L × W × H. Cylinder = π × r² × h. Sphere = 4/3 × π × r³. Cone = ⅓ × π × r² × h. 1 m³ = 1,000 litres = 35.31 cft.

Worked example

A tank 10 ft × 8 ft × 6 ft has a volume of 480 cft, which is 13.59 m³ or 13,592 litres. A cylinder with a 1 m radius and 2 m height holds 6.283 m³, which is 6,283 litres.

Understanding your result

Water weighs about 1 kg per litre, so a full tank is heavy. Check that the structure beneath can carry it. For excavation, multiply by a bulking factor, because loose soil takes more space.

When to use it

  • Size a water tank or sump.
  • Estimate excavation for a trench or pit.
  • Find how much concrete fills a footing or column.

Assumptions and limits

These are planning estimates. Real use depends on material quality, site conditions and workmanship. Confirm quantities with your engineer or contractor before ordering. Tank capacity in use is lower than the full volume, because of freeboard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the capacity of a tank in litres?

Find the volume in cubic metres and multiply by 1,000.

How many litres are in a cubic foot?

About 28.32 litres.

What is the volume of a cylinder?

π times the radius squared times the height.

How heavy is a full water tank?

About 1 kg per litre, plus the weight of the tank.

Can I use this for excavation?

Yes for the volume of the pit. Loose soil bulks up, so allow extra for carrying away.
