The formula

Characters are counted as Unicode characters. Characters without spaces remove all spaces, tabs and line breaks. Bytes use UTF-8 encoding. An SMS holds 160 characters, or 70 if the text has non-English characters.

Worked example

"Hello world! 123" has 16 characters, or 14 without spaces. It has 10 letters, 3 digits and 2 spaces, and takes 1 SMS and fits an X post with 264 characters left.

Understanding your result

Tamil and other non-English text takes 3 bytes per character and uses the shorter 70-character SMS limit. Search engines show roughly 60 characters of a title and 160 of a description.

When to use it

  • Fit a post, caption or SMS into a limit.
  • Write SEO titles and meta descriptions.
