How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the file size and choose its unit.
  2. Enter your internet speed and its unit.
  3. Set the efficiency. 85% is a sensible default.
  4. Read the download time.

The formula

Time (seconds) = File size in megabits ÷ (Speed in Mbps × Efficiency). File size in megabits = Size in MB × 8.

Worked example

A 2 GB file is 16,000 megabits. At 100 Mbps and 85% efficiency, the effective speed is 85 Mbps, so it takes 16,000 ÷ 85 = about 188 seconds, which is 3 minutes 8 seconds. At the full 100 Mbps it takes 2 minutes 40 seconds.

Understanding your result

Speeds are given in bits, and file sizes in bytes, so the calculator converts them for you. If the time seems long, check whether the server limits speed, or whether Wi-Fi is slowing you down.

When to use it

  • Plan game, movie or software downloads.
  • Estimate a large backup upload or download.
  • Compare plans by real download times.

Assumptions and limits

Uses decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB). Actual time varies with network conditions and the server.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to download 1 GB at 50 Mbps?

About 2 minutes 40 seconds at full speed, or around 3 minutes at 85% efficiency.

Why do I divide by 8?

A byte is 8 bits, and speeds are measured in bits.

What efficiency should I use?

Use 80 to 90% for normal use. Use less for busy Wi-Fi.

Does it work for uploads?

Yes. Enter your upload speed instead.

What is 1 TB at 1 Gbps?

About 2 hours 13 minutes at full speed.
