How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the value.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you want.
  3. Choose decimal (storage makers) or binary (operating systems).
  4. Read the result and the table of all units.

The formula

Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 B, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, and so on. Binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 B, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, and so on. Result = Value × (From unit in bytes) ÷ (To unit in bytes).

Worked example

500 GB is 0.5 TB in decimal units. In binary units, 500 GiB is about 0.488 TiB. A 500 GB drive holds 500,000,000,000 bytes, which Windows shows as about 465.66 GB, because it counts in 1,024s.

Understanding your result

Drive makers use decimal units, while Windows reports binary units under the name GB. That is why a new drive seems smaller than advertised. The difference is about 7% at GB and grows at TB.

When to use it

  • Check drive, phone or cloud storage sizes.
  • Convert file sizes for uploads and limits.
  • Understand storage differences between brands and Windows.

Assumptions and limits

The binary names are KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB. Many systems still print them as KB, MB and GB.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?

1,000 MB in decimal units, or 1,024 MiB in binary units.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

The maker counts 1 TB as 1,000 GB, and Windows counts in 1,024s, which shows about 931 GiB.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

How many GB are in a TB?

1,000 in decimal units and 1,024 in binary units.

What comes after TB?

PB, then EB.
