Internet Speed Calculator: Mbps, MB/s and Real-World Speed

Enter a speed in any unit to see it in Mbps, MB/s, Gbps and Kbps, and how many gigabytes it moves per hour and per day. You can also work out your speed from the size and time of a download.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose whether you know a speed, or the data size and the time taken.
  2. Enter the speed and its unit, or the size and the time.
  3. Read the speed in Mbps and MB/s.
  4. Check the data per hour and the real-world estimate.

The formula

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8, because 1 byte is 8 bits. Gbps = Mbps ÷ 1,000. Data per hour (GB) = MB/s × 3,600 ÷ 1,000. Speed from a download = Data in megabits ÷ Seconds.

Worked example

100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s, so it moves about 45 GB per hour and 1,080 GB per day at full speed. A 500 MB download in 1 minute 20 seconds is 4,000 megabits ÷ 80 s = 50 Mbps. A real-world estimate at 90% is 45 Mbps.

Understanding your result

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second, but files are measured in megabytes, so the number on the plan is 8 times the file speed. Real speeds are usually a little lower because of protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and server limits.

When to use it

  • Understand what your plan really delivers.
  • Compare Mbps and MB/s from different tools.
  • Check your speed from a real download.

Assumptions and limits

The 90% estimate is a typical figure, not a guarantee. Your speed varies with the network, device, Wi-Fi and the server.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

12.5 MB/s, since you divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second and MB/s is megabytes per second. One byte has 8 bits.

Why is my download slower than my plan?

Overhead, Wi-Fi, other devices and the server all lower the real speed.

How many GB can I download per day at 100 Mbps?

About 1,080 GB at full speed, with no break.

What is 1 Gbps in Mbps?

1,000 Mbps.
